Chapter 15

AS THEY strolled down Commercial Street eating their double mint-chocolate chip ice cream cones, Zach realized neither of them had spoken since placing their orders. What was that about? They had shared some rather personal stories. Well, Van’s had been extremely private. His bout of public indecency and descent into whoredom in no way compared to what Van had been through.

Had they shared too much? Were things now going to be uncomfortable because of it?

He hoped not. The quiet didn’t appear to be a bad omen for some weird reason. It seemed they were both at peace, as if they’d somehow settled into a miraculously comfortable relationship.

When he had approached Van at tea, he’d been angling to score some action with a hot guy. Secretly, he still hoped that might happen, but he found it odd that he’d been thrown completely off the hunt that had enraptured him since his first tea.

What they now shared seemed even better than chasing ass.

How could he have forgotten how much he truly enjoyed connecting with another person? It had been too long since that had happened to him. He and Ben had a connection, but it always seemed forced. Whatever was going on between him and Van wasn’t forced. It made things a little frightening.

He’d never met a man who opened himself up so freely. Although he could tell the story had been difficult for Van to recount, it hadn’t stopped him from doing so.

A sense of security he’d never experienced around anyone else wrapped its arms around him. Like a big, unseen hug.

Van had nothing to hide, which was a rare commodity in Zach’s world. His life had been rife with secrets, from the ones that destroyed his family to the one that ultimately ended his time with Ben.

If he wanted to know something about Van, all he had to do was ask.

“We’ve been quiet for a while,” Van said as they approached a building called the Crown & Anchor. “Anything on your mind?”

“It’s silly.”

“Well, I have to know now,” Van said as he playfully nudged his shoulder into Zach. The sudden move almost made Zach drop his ice cream, but he managed to save it. His surprisingly adept speed astonished him. He rarely recovered from such bungles.

“Look at you,” Van pointed out. “You didn’t make a mess like you did yesterday.”

“I must be getting graceful in my old age.”

“Either that or you really love ice cream.”

Zach thought about it. “It must be the ice cream.”

“That’s what I thought,” Van chimed in.

“Smartass.”

Van chuckled. “You have no idea.”

As they walked in front of the Crown & Anchor, a bevy of activity buzzed around the building. People packed the courtyard to the right. Most waited to be seated at the hotel’s eatery, the Central House restaurant, which comprised the patio and main floor of the hotel. The structure itself was remarkable. Painted yellow and white, the building extended to three stories, with balconies at each level of the façade.
